October of every year is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. This year our chapter decided to make, October mean a little more than it has in years gone by. We decided to organize a philanthropy event to raise money and awareness for this worthwhile cause. The idea was simple from the beginning, make t-shirts, sell them and contribute all the proceeds to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. I conferred with the President of the Affiliate of the foundation here in Lexington, David Moore, and he got quite excited about the idea. After talking with David Moore, we marketed the t-shirts to the Greek community here at the University of Kentucky. The t-shirts for the guys said “Real Men Wear Pink” on the front, while the front of the girls shirt said “My Man Wears Pink”. We sold the t-shirts for $10.00 a piece, and were able to donate $2,763.00 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We sold 530 shirts, which we feel was not too bad for being our first year. After advertising in the Kentucky Kernel, a local school newspaper, on October 16, we had a campus wide day for everyone who bought a shirt to wear theirs to class, and later that day we gathered at a central location on campus to take a group photo, and to have a check presentation to David Moore. Some famous people from our campus came out to help bring notoriety to our cause. Susan West, Dean of Fraternal and Sorority Affairs here at the University, and our beloved mascot the Wildcat, who also wore the t-shirt during that weeks football game against the University of Florida. We hope to make this an annual event, and even next year to make it campus wide. If any other chapter would also like to participate next year, contact the Omicron Chapter and we can see if we can make this a national Philanthropy to help put Alpha Gamma Rho on the map.
